"A Purpose Driven Life in a Purpose Driven
Church"
"The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am
I Here For?" by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church has
been a mega best seller, sometimes selling so fast that
stores have difficulty keeping it stocked! Unlike so many
bestselling self-help books that suggest you try to find the
purpose and meaning of your life by looking within yourself,
this one focuses on God, His will and His plan for you. Find
out how this book can be used by Catholics to improve our
relationship with Christ as Fr. Joe Shea helps us answer the
question: “What on earth am I here for?" (Hint: It’s not
about you!) You don’t need to have read the book or even own
a copy to appreciate this talk.

Monsignor Padraic
Loftus | "Does Mass Confuse
You?"
Catholicism
is rich in tradition, ceremony and symbolism. Over the years
many of the symbolic gestures and traditions have become
more of a habit than anything else. Has Mass become routine
for you? Do you sometimes feel like your just going through
the motions? Join us as Monsignor Padraic Loftus takes us on
a fresh look at the history of our Mass and helps us to know
why we do the things we do.

Peter Canavan | "How
to Bring Your Best Self Into
Relationships"
Men.
Women. Can't
live with them. Can't live without them. What is it about
men and women that make them tick? We interact everyday with
each other, we fall in and out of love and we marry and live
happily ever after. But what makes us tick? What is the
secret behind the estrogen/testosterone balance ... and do
we really want to know? Come and explore these intriguing
thoughts with speaker Peter Canavan.

"Peace and Justice"
How do we
reconcile the Christian command to "seek peace" when we find
ourselves living in a world of injustice? "If you want
peace, work for justice."
These words
by Pope Paul VI set the stage for the third session on
social justice. At this gathering, author Eric DeBode will
introduce the concepts of peace and social justice in the
context of our Catholic Christian faith. The presentation
will be followed by a question and answer period focused on
determining what we can do to make a difference.
Though
Catholic teachings are uniform on the sanctity and value of
life, many scholars within the church differ on what the
truly Christian response should be when facing multilayered
social problems such as racism, homelessness, crime and
poverty.
In becoming
the person Christ wants us to be, we are encouraged to seek
wisdom and truth regardless of our nationality, social
status, economic bracket or demographic.

About Theology on Tap
During the first 20 years, 1981 to
2000, Theology on Tap was hosted by 120 different parishes. More
than 175 speakers have been privileged to address over 30,000
young adults during these summer sessions. Theology on Tap began
in June 1981 at St. James Parish in Arlington Heights, as a
response to a conversation between a parish priest and a young man
from the parish who was graduating from college. That man was
looking beyond his last few months of college to the "real world."
He was facing a career and wondering about the future. He was
concerned about his personal identity and finding meaning in life.
"Will I be more than my job? What will it mean to fall in love?
Where does God fit in all this? What does it mean to be Catholic?"
Theology on Tap will continue to address these and similar
questions.
Theology-On-Tap is a four-week speaker
conversation program that takes God out of the confines of a
church building and into the daily lives of young adults by
offering a series of topics that young adults care about in a
relaxed and fun environment.
Who will attend TOT?
We are targeting the Catholic young adult
community — singles and couples in their 20s and 30s: young adults
trying to make sense of their lives. These young adults are
seeking to meet other Catholic young adults asking some of the
same questions.
Why target this audience?
This group of people are often overlooked by
the Catholic Church. There are programs designed to meet the needs
of elementary to junior high, high school and older adults. After
receiving the sacrament of confirmation or graduation from high
school, there is no direct follow-up by the Catholic Church to
young adults. We want to remedy this situation by providing more
guidance and support for young adults as they make critical
decisions about work, school, family, relationships, even
decisions regarding their faith. Theology oOn Tap is one step in
that direction.
This is an excellent event to
invite someone that has not been to church in a while. We hope
that you will join us and feel free invite as many friends as you
want. For more information, e-mail tot@sfmya.org. |
